Quebec police forces launching water-safety crackdown this weekend

Part of the weekend campaign includes reminding boaters of some fundamental tips to be followed even before leaving the dock.

Quebec police forces whose patrol territories include the province’s waterways will this engage this weekend in a crackdown aimed at improving the safety of the growing number of Quebecers who have become recreational boaters.

The Sûreté du Québec as well as the police forces of Montreal, Laval, Quebec City and other municipalities will conduct spot checks and inspections of watercraft and enforce the regulations of the Canada Shipping Act.

Part of the weekend campaign includes reminding boaters of some fundamental tips to be followed even before leaving the dock, such as: checking the state of the weather before heading out, conducting an online examination of the route one intends to use (and informing someone ashore as to what the route and schedule will be), and ensuring that all safety equipment including properly fitted flotation devices are on the watercraft prior to departure.

Valuable information on water safety regulations and advice can be found in Transport Canada’s Safe Boating Guide.
