Departures ramp at Trudeau airport reopens following environmental protest

But travellers can expect traffic delays as a result of morning protest by Last Generation Canada.

Travellers heading to Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport Wednesday afternoon can expect traffic delays as a result of a morning protest by an environmental group that blocked the ramp to the departures area for a few hours.

The departures ramp had reopened by 2 p.m., but the airport continued to invite people to use express drop-offs at the P4 and P10 parking lots to facilitate movement on the site.

Montreal police received a call from airport security to assist with Last Generation Canada protesters around 10:30 a.m., spokesperson Antony Dorelas said. In an update just before 1 p.m., he said half of the protesters fled when police arrived while the other half glued their hands to the pavement.

Jacob Pirro, a spokesperson for the group, said three protesters glued their hands to block access to the airport.

“We are part of an international uprising to end oil by 2030,” the post reads, noting actions were co-ordinated Wednesday in Germany, the United Kingdom, Norway, Switzerland, Austria and Finland. “We are demanding our government endorse the fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty proposal and implement a national firefighting agency.”

In an email, airport spokesperson Eric Forest had said that “measures are in place to remedy this situation as quickly as possible.”
