Chrysler advises not charging Pacifica PHEVs due to fire risk

The automaker just recalled the popular minivan, and so some Canadian transit services are banning it from local ferries

  • Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans from 2017 through 2021 are being recalled for a fire risk
  • Owners of affected vehicles are being asked to park outside and not charge it up
  • Ontario Ferries has banned those Pacificas from its vessels until the recall fix is made

The issue is said to involve certain examples of the Pacifica built between 2017 and 2021; all told, about 3,000 vans are impacted by the recall in Canada. The safety risk posed has led the manufacturer to advise owners not to charge their vehicle (which is kinda the whole point of buying a PHEV) and to park the things outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repairs are completed.

The latter notation is of no small detail for people who live in condos or apartment buildings with underground parking, to say nothing of suburban families (this van’s primary demographic) who park in an enclosed garage. The brand says this recommendation is being made out of an abundance of caution, but it’s also caught the attention of other government agencies run by people with tall hats and plastic shoes.

In terms of the fix, a remedy is apparently undergoing validation by Stellantis engineers. It involves a software update designed to detect the abnormality; if the defect is found, dealers will replace the vehicle’s high-voltage battery free of charge. Customers are advised to hit up the Chrysler or Transport Canada website to see if their van is affected by this recall.
