Pump issues force water restrictions to remain at Stage 2

The intake pumps are different from those the city has been turning on at the Bearspaw water treatment facility to increase flow through the Bearspaw south feeder main.

Calgarians will need to stick to their one hour per week sprinkler schedule due to pump issues at two city water facilities.

Intake pumps at the Bearspaw and Glenmore water treatment facilities are being inspected after they “tripped a breaker” late Sunday night, said Michael Thompson, the city’s general manager of infrastructure services.

“While these pump issues are not related to the performance of the feeder main, they do impact how much water we can flow from the two water treatment plants through the system,” Thompson said on Monday.

He said the issues “are not major” but do require they conduct an assessment and perform maintenance, which is currently underway.

“Restoring water service requires careful attention to all conditions within the network to ensure that we are able to continue water service to homes and businesses,” she said.

“We will reassess whether we are ready to move to the Stage 1 restrictions through the week and we’ll bring an update to our revised plan,” Thompson said.

The intake pumps are different from those the city has been turning on at the Bearspaw water treatment facility to increase flow through the Bearspaw south feeder main — which remains at 70 per cent capacity.

A smaller water main break that occurred on Friday near the original June 5 rupture site in Montgomery was repaired Sunday night — city officials have said it was not connected to the Bearspaw feeder main.
