Installing the Thule Motion 3 XL roof box was surprisingly straightforward. Once the crossbars were in place, getting the cargo box secured was quick and easy. It’s designed for a snug fit, so we never worried about it coming loose during our trips. We can easily take it on and off but I am not sure we need to, it has been fine to just keep it on, even when it is empty.

Is the Thule Motion 3 XL waterproof?
It happened to be raining heavily on our last tournament trip. We had open bags of clothing and other items inside the cargo box, and I’m thrilled to say everything stayed completely dry. The Thule Motion 3 XL is indeed waterproof.
Ease of loading and unloading
As someone who’s not particularly tall, loading and unloading the cargo box was a concern. I have to step on the side of the vehicle to reach inside and while I can’t reach right to the other side, it hasn’t been an issue. The box is easy to open and close, though it does feel a bit flimsy when opening, likely due to its lightweight build. However, it’s sturdy and high-quality once it’s closed and secured.
Driving experience with the Thule Roof Box
We initially questioned whether we’d feel the cargo box while driving. We used Thule crossbars to mount the box since our car didn’t come with them, and everything was rock solid. There was no rattling, no noise, and no movement from the roof box, even on bumpy roads into the parks.
Sunroof and hatch accessibility
One of the great features of the Thule Motion 3 XL roof box is that it doesn’t impede the functionality of the sunroof. We can still open the sunroof and enjoy fresh air without having the sun shining directly into the car, which we found to be quite pleasant. Additionally, it’s important to measure your vehicle to ensure the cargo box fits properly and allows easy access to the hatch. With our Lexus RX 350, we had no issues opening the hatch fully with the Thule Motion 3 XL installed.
