A collaboration between multiple music-boosting organizations, Arts on the Ave has teamed up with MacEwan University and the Edmonton Jazz Society (Yardbird Suite).

Every Thursday at 7 p.m. through July and August — and even a Sept. 26 date — a different player or group will spice up the scene just south of 118 Avenue east of Arts on the Ave’s HQ at The Carrot, located at 9351 118 Ave.

Subsequent shows on the roster are an Aug. 8 Tony Flanagan quartet performance, the dynamic trombone of Audrey Ochoa’s quartet on Aug. 15, Leesila Dawkins on Aug. 22 and Sean Croal in a trio on Aug. 29.

Then, as scheduled so far, Gareth Gilliland Trio wraps it up on Sept. 26.

“Jazz, like the Alberta Avenue district, fuses diverse backgrounds into a vibrant whole,” said Christy Morin, Arts on the Ave’s executive director. “By offering this series of jazz events, we aim to meld jazz enthusiasts and newcomers to the genre in unforgettable performances.

“We also acknowledge the deep history jazz has played in Edmonton,” she said, summoning visions of Tommy Banks, Big Miller and Brett Miles.

Wine and bratwurst consumption is encouraged, and tickets to the shows are an affordable $10 a pop.
