Northvolt construction site targeted by vandals who put down nail strips

Last month, vandals drove nails into trees at the construction site. Both acts could harm workers, a Northvolt spokesman says.

The Northvolt battery plant in the Montérégie has been struck once again by vandals after someone put down nail strips at the installations’ construction site, the company said on Tuesday.

Overnight between Sunday and Monday, “individuals illegally entered Northvolt property to commit vandalism by hiding nail strips,” a company spokesperson said in an exchange of emails with the Presse Canadienne.

“We are also checking to see if nails have been driven into trees. These acts are potentially dangerous for employees now at the site. We strongly denounce them,” spokesperson Emmanuelle Rouillard-Moreau said.

Northvolt said it had “received all necessary authorizations to proceed with the work currently underway,”  and added that it is “keen to establish a sincere, constructive and transparent dialogue with its host community to create, here in Quebec, the greenest battery plant in the world.”

People claiming responsibility for that act posted online: “We will sabotage equipment, block work sites and harass politicians in the pay of industry.”

By Tuesday morning, no one had claimed responsibility for the latest incident of vandalism.
