Backcountry avalanche kills snowmobiler near Castle Mountain

A 47-year-old Alberta man was killed Saturday afternoon when he was buried in an avalanche while snowmobiling near the Castle Mountain Ski Resort.

RCMP said the unidentified man, a resident of Magrath, was in the backcountry with another adult male and two children around 1 p.m. when the avalanche struck in an area between the ski hill and Carbondale.

The other man was able to escape with both children, RCMP said in a release Sunday night.

Pincher Creek RCMP members, with the help of Southwestern Alberta Regional Search Rescue, Fernie Search and Rescue and Alberta Conservation, were able to locate and recover the victim Sunday afternoon.

Castle Mountain is about 250 kilometres south of Calgary.
