Burrard Bridge in Vancouver reopens after pro-Palestinian protest

Bridge shut for 90 minutes in both directions

The Burrard Bridge in Vancouver was closed to traffic for around 90 minutes on Monday night after a group calling for an end to hostilities in Gaza held a large demonstration there.

The protest occurred as a medical emergency closed the Canada Line SkyTrain from Waterfront to Olympic Village.

Vancouver police asked drivers to stay away from the bridge during the incident.

Multiple bus routes were diverted away from the bridge as a result of the protest.

The protestors, holding Freedom for Palestine banners, took a small vehicle on to the bridge, alongside which a speech was made. The gathering began in downtown Vancouver and was prompted by the recent Israeli bombing of Rafah in the southern edge of Gaza. Until now, the offensive has been aimed at the northern part of Gaza.
