Canadiens game day: Caufield, Drouin expected to face Senators

OTTAWA — There will be no resumption of the bad blood between Brendan Gallagher and Tim Stützle when the Canadiens meet the Senators Wednesday at the Canadian Tire Centre (7 p.m., SN, RDS, TSN 690 Radio, 98.5 FM).

Gallagher is out for at least another week with a lower-body injury, while Stützle is sidelined with a strained shoulder.

Gallagher was highly critical of Stützle following a 6-3 loss to the Senators on April 5, accusing the Senators’ centre of faking an injury.

“When I was 10 years old, our coach had a rule if you lay on the ice,” said Gallagher. “If the coach had to come on the ice and get you, you’re too hurt to play. You had to sit for a minimum three shifts. He’s a great player. I’ve played against him for two, three years now. More than half the games we’ve played against him he’s laid on the ice and he’s right back out there the next shift.

“He lies on the ice,” Gallagher added. “He acts like he’s hurt. He sells the call. He’s on the ice that same power play. You know, there’s kids watching. We’re role models. If I was a teammate of his, I’d tell him to smarten up. It’s just not a good look. Very talented player, very good player. He needs to stop laying on the ice. It’s embarrassing.”

The comment came after centre Nick Suzuki attempted to deliver a shoulder-to-shoulder hit on Stützle, but missed and instead hit him knee-on-knee. He was penalized two minutes for kneeing.

Stützle appeared to be hurt on the play, but eventually got up and was able to play on the ensuing power play. The Senators scored with the extra man to take a 4-3 lead.

Stützle, who is Ottawa’s second-leading scorer with 10 goals and 17 assists, crashed into the boards and left Monday’s 3-0 win over Anaheim.

Smith said he wasn’t surprised by the Canadiens’ play this season.

“That first line (Suzuki, Caufield and Kirby Dach) is real and they have some good veteran players like (Mike) Hoffman and (Evgenii) Dadonov and a good young defenceman in Kaiden Guhle,” said Smith.
